We at Whispers & Anarchy believe in a sustainable lifestyle. While the holiday season is a wonderful celebration period, we feel it is important to consider ways by which we can avoid wastefulness and celebrate in a more environmentally friendly manner. We’ve compiled this list to share with you 20 simple ways to make the holidays more eco friendly.
Avoid using disposable cutlery, plates and cups. Instead use washable dinnerware and cutlery. Whether you’re having family, friends or guests over for a feast over the holiday period, or you’re simply treating yourself to a delicious meal, we believe this will make a major difference with the amount of waste generated from disposable cutlery.
Instead of throwing away leftovers, donate them or freeze them. Food wastage is at an all time high during the holiday periods where perfectly good food is binned. We suggest that you freeze or donate leftovers in order to play your part in reducing food wastage. If you’re having friends or family over, offer them a portion of any excess food as well.
Purchase local or sustainably sourced produce when planning for your festive meal. Local and sustainably sourced produce is not only fresher and healthier for your family, it also helps reduce the environmental impact of having to transport food over large distances across the globe. Support your local farmers markets by sourcing your fruits and vegetables from them.
Grow food with your loved ones. Celebrate the holiday season by spending quality time with your loved ones during a fun and eco-friendly activity. Grow your own plants and herbs together. When it's time to harvest, it's double the fun to cook the vegetables and herbs into delicious foods with your special ones.
Cut down on cheese. Surprisingly, producing half a kg of cheese generates around 5kgs of carbon dioxide. This is extremely harmful for the environment. We suggest to avoid consumption of cheese during the holiday season when cheesy dishes are most widely prepared.
Use biodegradable wrapping paper for gifts. Gift wrapping material is usually made of non-recyclable plastic, causing a high amount of wastage during the holiday season especially. We suggest you opt for biodegradable wrapping paper instead to secure your gifts. Alternatively, forgo the wrapping paper and use a cloth bag instead.
Gift eco-friendly presents to your friends and family. While the wrapping paper is important, we feel that so is what is inside. Avoid gifting single use or wasteful items to your loved ones. Instead, opt for useful and biodegradable presents that have various uses and can be recycled.
Make DIY or recycled presents. The holiday season is about spreading joy and love. Nothing is more meaningful than a handmade, totally personalized present for your loved ones. Take the time and effort to create a special gift for your family and friends, you can even use recycled materials from around your house to make gifts.
Plan experiences with your loved ones rather. Treat your loved ones to a special experience this holiday season. Plan for tree planting sessions, gardening, picnics and anything that your loved ones enjoy. We suggest to plan these experiences and spend quality time together rather than spending on consumable presents.
Use LED lights for your decorations. Traditional lights use extremely high amounts of energy and are less efficient in comparison to LED lights. We suggest you invest in these in order to bring down the energy consumption at your house. LED lights are also much more long lasting and you would not need to replace them for a long time.
